The grid connection problem

In town, connecting to the grid is a form and a fee. In the country, it can be a construction project.

If the nearest supply is a long way off, someone has to pay for the poles, the wire, the transformer and the trenching to reach you. That someone is usually you. The bill can run into the thousands, and it climbs with every extra metre.

Then there's the wait. Network extensions take design work, approvals and scheduling, and none of it runs to your building timeline.

And once you're connected, the costs don't stop. You pay a daily supply charge whether you use any power or not, plus the usage on top. At the end of a long rural line, you're also first to lose power in a storm and last to get it back.

What off-grid solar systems actually costs

The average off-grid solar system for a home runs between $50,000 and $70,000. That covers the panels, the battery storage, the inverters and a backup generator connection, designed and installed as one system.
